SAMUEL FROST AND THE WESTMINSTER CONFESSION OF FAITH by Dr. K. Talbot

SAMUEL FROST AND THE WESTMINSTER CONFESSION OF FAITH “Who are you calling an idiot?” I have known Samuel Frost for over 10 years. We are friends and we do disagree on many theological issues. I am Reformed and he is not. I am covenantal and he is not. However, we are agreed on Apologetics. I was a student of Dr. Gordon Clark, and Samuel was trained in Axiomatic Presuppositionalism. He knows the system well. We are both young earth creationists and I greatly appreciate his defense against the mi… Continue

Acts 2 and Psalm 16: The Glorified Body of Christ: A Reponse to Jonathan.

Acts 2:29-36 states, "Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Bei… Continue

“You Shall Certainly Die”: A Response to Dr. Talbot

Hopefully, no one will misinterpret the title of this essay! Dr. Talbot and I have a strong sense of humor, and perhaps beginning with a sort of levity will help the conversation. I have no pleasure in pointing out what I believe are fatal mistakes to what Dr. Talbot has proposed recently, found here: http://preteristdebate.ning.com/profiles/blogs/dying-you-shall-die In reading the post for the first time, I was interrupted by the phone. It was Jason Bradfield. He was calling to see if I had se… Continue

The Westminster Confession of Faith: Atonement

"We can't nail those pesky Preterists on Creeds, because they just quote the Confession and argue sola Scriptura. We need to find another tact: Let's insist they deny justification by faith and the Atonement - heck, let's even get them to admit that Jesus was not glorified!" You have to keep in mind that we have been successful in arguing sola Scriptura. Only a few, very few, are still hanging on to a revised meaning of this doctrine. We stand squarely, word for word, on the Westminster Confess… Continue

The Westminster Confession of Faith states, "WCF 31.4 All synods or councils, since the Apostles' times, whether general or particular, may err; and many have erred. Therefore they are not to he made the rule of faith, or practice; but to be used as a help in both." The Scriptures they used to back this up were Eph. 2:20; Acts 17:11; 1 Cor. 2:5; 2 Cor. 1:24. "And ye are built upon the foundations of the legates and the prophets; and Jesus the Messiah hath become the head of the corner in the ed… Continue

A Hell of a Mess!

My studies of the Hebrew word sheol have been elaborate. I want to condense the conclusion that I have found by quoting The Theology of the Old Testament by Andrew Bruce Davidson, Stewart Dingwall Fordyce Salmond (1883): That is a representation, according to which Sheol is a vast underground mausoleum, with cells all around like graves. But it may be asserted with some reason that nowhere is Sheol confounded with the grave, or the word used for the place of the dead body. Sheol is thContinue

John Daille Reviewed

In Misplaced Hope I quote the French Reformed Pastor (17th century) and his book, the Right Use of the Fathers. This is a review from that work in 1841. In bold, I highlight the importanpoints. If you can find this book, BUY IT! A Treatise on the Right Use of the Fathers in tJie Decision of Controversies existing at this day in Rtligion. By John Daille, Minister of the Gospel in the Reformed Church of Paris. Translated from the French, and Revised, by the Rev. T. Smith, M. A. of Christ Church,… Continue

Today's Devotional: Oswald Chambers

As I have written about elsewhere, I have taken up (again) reading Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest. I read these along with the Psalms and the Proverbs (Proverbs has 31 chapters, each chapter a day, every month) in the morning. These simple spiritual practices has revolutionized some things in my life - by His Spirit, of course. Spending time alone meditating on God's world and word should be a daily practice for us....morning, noon, and night. July 29, 2009 Do You See Jesus in Your… Continue

Review of John Walton's Genesis One and the implication to Beyond Creation Science

A Review of John H. Walton: The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate Finally, I received Walton’s book from EBAY (I love EBAY) for a small fee. I was anxious to get this book since I reviewed the “free snippet” in a blog a few weeks ago. Now, I have read and marked the entire book, and, for the most part, I am pleased at many things I found there. Walton writes with a very cautious attitude. He has to. This is an explosive subject. He treats the opponents… Continue

Gordon Clark and Karl Barth: Enemies

Recently, someone tried to pass off yet another uneducated argument that Clark's methodology is akin the Karl Barth. Here's the pathetic logic: Clark and Barth are the same in methodology; Preterists use Clark's Presuppositionalism to support their view of sola Scriptura; Barth was wrong; therefore Clark was wrong; therefore the Preterists are wrong. Sigh....read the following article: Karl Barth By John W. Robbins The following essay is the Foreword to Karl Barth’s Theological MetContinue

The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 1: Our Starting Point.

This article is a brief commentary. It really needs no commentary. But, for the readers, I'll add one and drive home the point of the title of this article. Chapter I Of the Holy Scripture I. Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men unexcusable;[1] The footnotes here refer to the Scriptural citations in the original draft. The Confession was written as a precise, logical piece. It'Continue

Clark-Van Til Controversy

The Clark-Van Til Controversy By Herman Hoeksema Editor’s note: In 1943 Dr. Gordon H. Clark, who was to become the foremost Christian philosopher of the twentieth century, sought ordination in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, a small denomination barely seven years old. Dr. Clark was immediately opposed by the faculty of Westminster Theological Seminary, led by Professor Cornelius Van Til. Despite their zealous opposition, Dr. Clark was ordained by the OPC. But the controversy was just… Continue

Epistemology

Very brief. Epistemology is the term used to answer the question: How do you know anything at all? Tough question. Hume, Kant, Einstein....thousands of brilliant minds have attempted to answer. None have gained international consensus. Most of them differ. How does a Christian go about answering it. In my discussions with my wonderful brother, Jim Kessler, we have been discussing Eve, the mother of all the living. First, we approached the texts themselves. We saw that we defined things, like "… Continue

The Kingdom of God is At Hand

In Matthew 13.31-32 we read: 31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. For our readers, we do not need to rehearse all of the words of our Lord which stated "the kingdom of God is at hand." Neither do w… Continue

The Christ Like Walk

This chapter, from the Quaker Hannah Whithall Smith (The Christian's Secret of A Happy Life, 1870) really floored me. Here are some excerpts: "If all that has been written in the preceding chapters on the life hid with Christ is true, its results ought to be very noticeable in our daily walk as Christians. The people who have entered into the enjoyment of it ought to be "peculiar people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:14). My son once wrote to a friend saying something to this effect: t… Continue

John Walton: The Lost World of Genesis One

IVP has recently introduced The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate by John H. Walton. This book was suggested to me by Rich (thanks Rich). I just ordered it from EBAY. However, I found Monergism Books (www.monergismbooks.com) carries the title. That carrier is a conservative and Reformed one. So, it peaked my interest. On that site, they have a special 10 page preview of the book. Thus, this is what I have read so far, and what stood out immediately. "som… Continue
